A Community Tree Needs Aftercare Beyond Planting Day

The planting photograph is easy to organise. The quieter work happens later, when the weather changes, volunteers go away and the new tree still needs attention.

Before the planting event, agree who is responsible for aftercare and who covers absences. A rota should name a person for the next check, not rely on everyone assuming someone else watered.

Write a plan for this tree and this site

Ask the supplier, local arborist or responsible land manager about the species, soil, planting size and local conditions. The Arbor Day Foundation’s watering guidance emphasises that both too little and too much water can harm trees. A universal bucket count is not a substitute for a site-specific plan.

Record how moisture will be checked, where water should be applied and how the plan changes with rainfall or hot weather. Confirm access to a suitable water supply before volunteers arrive with empty containers.

Keep mulch away from the trunk and follow the agreed maintenance advice. If stakes, ties or guards are used, schedule checks so they do not become forgotten fixtures as the tree grows.

Make observations easy to hand over

A shared record can include the date, soil observation, action taken and any concern. Photographs from a consistent position can help show change, but avoid diagnosing every pale leaf from a picture.

Provide a contact for damaged guards, broken branches, vandalism or signs of poor establishment. Volunteers should know which tasks they can do and which need a qualified person or the landowner’s permission.

Include aftercare in the project’s budget and success measures. Counting trees planted is different from checking how many remain healthy after establishment. If the group cannot maintain ten trees well, a smaller planting with reliable care may serve the site better. The handover is complete only when the next visit has an owner and a date.
